He showed us how to properly do this ceremony. We also tasted local sweets and made our own matcha. The experience was good. If you want to experience the Japanese tea culture I would really recommend this course.

Experience tea ceremony in Nara, the Kurabi way
The matcha served at Kurabi’s tea ceremony comes from one of Japan’s oldest tea-growing regions, just outside historic Nara. Once part of the Kōfuku-ji Temple estate and later an Imperial domain, the area remains a renowned producer of Uji tea. Its fertile soil and ideal climate create a premium matcha with a rich aroma, smooth texture, and deep umami—offering an authentic taste of Nara’s tea culture.
Step into the serene world of the Japanese tea ceremony, where every detail holds a profound spiritual meaning. Among the most critical elements of this ritual is the kakejiku (hanging scroll) displayed in the alcove (tokonoma). Let's learn about hanging scrolls, an essential element of tea ceremonies, together with Kurabi. Far from mere decoration, these scrolls serve as a spiritual compass, setting the theme, season, and mindful focus for your experience.
No Japanese tea ceremony is complete without beautiful seasonal wagashi, delicately crafted to complement the flavor of matcha. We carefully select these traditional sweets from one of Nara's long-established confectionery shops, where artisans have preserved their craftsmanship for generations. Inspired by the changing seasons, each wagashi is both a work of art and a reflection of Japanese culture. During your experience, you can choose your favorite sweet to enjoy with your tea.
Elevate your matcha experience with our exclusive collection of unique, one-of-a-kind tea bowls (chawan). At Kurabi Salon, you can choose your favorite bowl to use during your tea ceremony or take home as a lasting memory of your journey. Among them are bowls made in Akahadayaki, a traditional style of pottery from Nara with a history spanning centuries. Each piece reflects the region’s distinctive craftsmanship and the deep connection between Japanese ceramics, tea, and spirituality.

The bamboo chasen (tea whisk) and chashaku (tea spoon) used in the tea ceremony embody generations of tradition and craftsmanship. In Nara, these tools are deeply rooted in the region’s tea culture, while the chasen is traditionally crafted by skilled artisans in Takayama, a historic production center just outside Nara. The chashaku itself carries a heritage of over 100 years, connecting each piece to the craftsmanship and history of the region.
The key to an authentic experience is the host who guides you. At Kurabi Salon, our tea master Mike brings the deep traditions of Japan to life in English, making the experience both personal and easy to understand. Depending on the day, your ceremony may also be guided by one of our other skilled tea masters, each bringing their own knowledge and style to the experience.
